    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Hybrid drink – The Black Mojito is a fun variation that combines the flavors of a rum and coke with the refreshing elements of a regular mojito into one delicious drink.

Perfect for Halloween – This refreshing cocktail adds a spooky touch as a “Black Magic Mojito” to your cocktail menu. Plus, it can easily be scaled up to serve a crowd for Halloween parties.

Sparkles – Thanks to the addition of edible glitter, this drink will sparkle and shine.  If you’re curious about edible glitter, check out my post about edible glitter drinks to learn more.

    Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for the cocktail spread out on a wood surface.

Fresh mint: Fresh mint leaves are a must for a mojito. I used extra for a garnish, but you can also use extra lime wedges for the garnish if you prefer.

Dark spiced rum: Your favorite dark spiced rum will work for this cocktail. I enjoyed Jonah’s Curse Black Rum for this recipe, but you can definitely also use a brand like Kraken Rum. You can use white rum if you want, but dark rum provides a deeper and richer flavor.

Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is always recommended for cocktails. If you must use bottled, opt for one that is 100% juice and not from concentrate.

Coca-Cola: Instead of soda water or sugar as the traditional recipe calls for, a Black Mojito is given its color, carbonation, and sweetness by using Coke. It also gives hints of caramel flavor. You can use other types of cola, but I’m partial to Coke. Other flavors that would work well would be Cherry or Vanilla Coke or Dr. Pepper.

Black edible glitter: You can find black edible glitter on Amazon. It is especially fun to add if you’re serving this drink for Halloween.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 showing adding the mint and rum to the cocktail glass.

Step 1: Muddle the mint by rubbing the mint gently in your hands and adding it to the cocktail glass. (Alternatively, you can use a muddler, which is more traditional.) Add ice and the rum to the glass.

Step 2 showing adding the lime juice and coke to the cocktail glass.

Step 2: Add the lime juice to the glass and top off with Coke.

Step 3 showing adding the black edible glitter and stirring the cocktail.

Step 3: Add the black edible glitter (optional). Stir the drink well, moving the spoon up and down while you stir to evenly distribute the ingredients.

Step 4 showing adding fresh mint as a garnish.

Step 4: Garnish with a sprig of mint, if desired.

    Expert Tips

To make a mocktail version of this dark mojito, simply omit the rum. Or, you can use brewed Chai tea for a mocktail variation, which will give a similar dark spice profile.

When preparing the mint for the Black Mojito, be sure to lightly rub or gently muddle it. Over-muddling can result in the mint becoming bitter.

If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add additional simple syrup or agave nectar to enhance the sweetness to your liking.

    FAQ

Is it safe to consume edible glitter?

Unlike traditional glitter, which is made from plastic and can be harmful if ingested, edible glitter is made from food-safe ingredients such as gum arabic, aluminum silicate, food coloring, and sometimes sugar or starch. If you want to try another Halloween cocktail made with edible glitter, check out my Black Magic Margarita. For more tips for buying edible glitter, make sure to check out my post on glittery drinks.

    How strong is a mojito?

The strength of a mojito can vary depending on what kind of rum you use. Rum typically ranges from 35% to 50% alcohol by volume (ABV). Overproof versions can go up to 75% ABV or more. Make sure to check your rum label and choose accordingly based on how strong you like your drinks.

Can I use sugar-free or diet soda?

Absolutely, you can use sugar-free or diet soda in a mojito. However, as with any drinks that use sugar alternatives, the taste will differ slightly compared to using regular soda.

Can I make a big batch or a pitcher? Can I make a batch in advance?

Yes, you can make a batch by muddling the mint in a large pitcher or punch bowl, then adding the rest of the ingredients and stirring well. I’ve included measurements for making this cocktail for a crowd in the recipe notes below.

I advise against making this ahead of time as the mint can turn the drink bitter if left for several hours and the soda can go flat. I recommend having your ingredients premeasured and a bottle of Coke ready to open to make the process easier.
