This pomegranate sour is made with pomegranate liqueur, whiskey, simple syrup, lemon juice, and egg whites. It’s the perfect spin on the classic whiskey sour.

This Pomegranate Sour recipe is one that everyone can love even those who don’t normally enjoy whiskey. It’s made with pomegranate liqueur, whiskey, simple syrup, lemon juice, and egg whites.

Whiskey can be a bit too strong for a lot of people, but the pomegranate liqueur and lemon juice balance with some tart flavor, the simple syrup balances it with a touch of sweetness, and the egg whites give a creamy mouth feel. A pomegranate whiskey sour is a perfect cocktail for any happy hour.

The sour family of cocktails is one of my absolute favorites. Examples include the gin sour, pisco sour, and of course whiskey sours. This Pomegranate Sour would be classified as a whiskey sour since whiskey is the base.

There is typically lemon juice and syrup added to a base liquor. The juice and syrup essentially make up a homemade sour mix. Egg whites are optional. Adding egg whites to a whiskey sour technically makes it a “Boston Sour”.

If you’ve never tried a cocktail with egg whites, don’t worry – it won’t taste or feel “egg-y” at all. It gives the cocktail a foamy top and creamy mouthfeel where you will taste all of the other ingredients and zero egg taste.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Whiskey: You can use your favorite whiskey – I actually ended up using bourbon whiskey since that is my favorite type.
    • Pomegranate liqueur: I used Pama Pomegranate liqueur, which can be easily found at most liquor stores. If you can’t find it, you can substitute pomegranate juice for a pomegranate sour.
    • Simple syrup: A simple syrup is made with equal parts water and sugar. You can easily make your own, but you can purchase some if you prefer. You can also use agave nectar, which mixes more easily than honey would.
    • Lemon juice: Fresh juice is best for making this classic cocktail.
    • Egg white: You can use a fresh egg white that you separate from the yolk, or you can use egg whites in the carton. Make sure you’re getting egg whites and not the ones that have a touch of yolk in the carton – those will not work. The advantage of the egg whites in the carton is that they are pasteurized making them safer than fresh egg whites. Technically the lemon juice and alcohol would likely prevent illness due to their antibacterial properties, but apparently, if you use fresh egg whites you should wait 9 minutes according to scientists to make sure the bacteria have been eliminated.
    • Garnishes: I used sliced lemons because it’s what I had, but if you have access to pomegranate seeds I think those would be perfect as well.

    Instructions

To make this Pomegranate Sour, you add all of the ingredients except for the garnishes into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake it up. The longer you shake it, the foamier and creamier this delicious cocktail will be.

You want to double strain by straining over a fine mesh strainer to make sure that if any of the egg white clumped up it won’t end up in the drink. You can pour it into a martini glass or a coupe glass like I did.
