This Strawberry Gin and Tonic recipe is the perfect cocktail for you if you’re looking for something refreshing and fruity. Made with gin, high quality tonic water, fresh strawberries, and lemon juice, it’s like a hybrid between a classic G&T and strawberry lemonade.

Gin and tonics are one of my go-to drinks when I’m not sure what I want. Same goes for my husband. He’s been on a real G&T kick as of late, so I decided to do a little experimenting with all of the summer fruit we have available right now.

This recipe is super simple and does not require making any special syrups, so you can easily pull it together whenever the mood strikes. Plus, you can built the drink right in the glass – no cocktail shaker required.

    Ingredients Notes

Ingredients for the cocktail spread out on a pink surface.

Strawberries – Fresh strawberries will provide the best flavor, but you can definitely use some frozen if that’s what’s available.

Gin – Use your favorite brand. For more berry flavor, try using Bombay Bramble Berry Gin, like I did in my Gin Spritz.

Lemon juice – I highly recommend fresh citrus juices in your cocktails. Bottled juices will often leave an aftertaste and won’t give you as brightness in a drink as fresh does.

Tonic water – I recommend getting high quality one over the basic ones. Fever-Tree and Q Mixers are both excellent brands. They also have different flavors of tonic water that would pair well with a Strawberry Gin and Tonic. Fever-Tree’s elderflower tonic would be excellent in this cocktail.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 showing muddling the strawberries and adding the gin.

Step 1: Muddle the strawberries in the bottom of a cocktail glass with either a cocktail muddler or wooden spoon. Add ice cubes and the gin.

Step 2 showing adding the lemon juice and topping with tonic water.

Step 2: Add the lemon juice and top with tonic water.

Step 3 showing stirring the cocktail and garnishing with a strawberry on a cocktail pick.

Step 3: Give the drink a good stir, moving the stirrer up and down as you stir to evenly distribute the ingredients. Garnish with an extra strawberry or lemon slice if desired.

    Tips and Variations

For a sweeter cocktail, add a touch of simple syrup to the cocktail. My homemade elderflower syrup would be a great option.

To make the drink more tart or sour, add extra lemon juice.

Instead of tonic water, try topping with sparkling lemonade or a high quality ginger beer for a gin mule.

Choose whatever glassware you prefer or have on hand. I used a collins glass, but the most traditional choice would be glassware that has a balloon shape.

If you want a mocktail version, I recommend making my Strawberry Elderflower Mocktail and substituting tonic water for the soda water.

    Batching and Making Ahead

You can certainly make a big batch of this cocktail. Simply multiply the measurements by the number of servings you need. I have included measurements for making 8 servings in the recipe card notes below.

As far as making the cocktail ahead, you can prep some of the drink ahead of time, but I don’t recommend making a batch of the complete cocktail in advance.

Simply, muddle your strawberries and add your gin and lemon juice to a large pitcher and chill in the fridge for up to 1 day in advance. When it’s time to serve, top with the tonic water and give it a really good stir, otherwise the muddled strawberries will stay at the bottom.

    Best Gins for G&T Cocktails

The best gin is the one that YOU like. London dry gins are pretty classic for G&Ts – like Bombay and Tanqueray. However, if you want to go off the beaten path a bit, here are a few of my favorites:

    • Teasmith Gin – This one hails from Scotland and is made with handpicked Ceylon tea. This flavor profile would be lovely in a Strawberry Gin and Tonic.
    • Mermaid Zest  – This is what I used when I made this recipe. It’s an English gin made on the Isle of Wight. It’s very citrusy and has some notes of rosemary. I really enjoyed it in this cocktail.
    • Hat Trick Gin – This might be a little hard to find based on where you live. It’s produced by a local Charleston distillery – High Wire. It also has a bright citrusy flavor along with floral notes and botanicals like coriander and cardamom.
    • If you can’t find any of these, try checking out your local distilleries. There are so many small, independent distilleries out there making amazing products, but lack the resources to distribute widely.
