Why This Recipe is a Must-Try

    • Exotic flavor adventure: The tropical cocktail is exotic, sweet, and sour. It’s like a mini vacation in a glass, perfect for those moments when you crave something out of the ordinary.
    • Visually stunning: This cocktail isn’t just about taste; it’s a feast for the eyes too. The vibrant, deep orange hue and the edible flower garnish create a visually stunning drink that’s sure to garner compliments from anyone you serve it to.
    • Perfect balance: The sweet and tart flavors create a well-balanced drink. It’s this delicate balance that makes the Passion Fruit Martini so universally appealing.

    Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for the cocktail spread out on a wood surface.

Fresh passion fruit – I snagged mine at Harris Teeter, but they can be elusive! You’ll often find them in national, specialty stores like Whole Foods. Keep an eye out, they’re worth the hunt.

Vanilla vodka – I used Absolut Vanilla. Regular vodka can be used, but the vanilla gives a smooth, rich flavor that pairs perfectly with the tropical notes of this cocktail.

Passion liqueur – Chinola is my go-to brand here. I love the thick, almost creamy mouthfeel. I also like to keep it in the fridge to last longer. If you can’t find it, you can try Alizé Gold Passion and Passoa Passion Fruit liqueur.

Lime juice – Always opt for fresh lime juice. It adds a zesty, fresh kick that bottled juice just can’t match. In a pinch, you can use bottled, but the flavor will suffer a bit.

Simple syrup – You can buy simple syrup on Amazon, but you can make your own simple syrup very easily: just heat equal parts water and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar dissolves. Allow it to cool, pour into an airtight container, and keep in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks.

Garnishes – Think outside the box with edible flowers (make sure they’re intended for consumption; I found mine at Whole Foods in the fresh herbs section of the produce area NOT in the floral department). They add a delightful, Instagram-worthy touch to your martini.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 showing adding the fresh passion fruit and vanilla vodka to the cocktail.

Step 1: Split the fruit in half. Then, scoop the insides into an empty cocktail shaker along with the vanilla vodka.

Step 2 showing adding the passion fruit liqueur and lime juice to the cocktail shaker.

Step 2: Add the liqueur, lime juice, simple syrup, and ice cubes to the shaker.

Step 3 showing shaking the cocktail and straining into a cocktail glass.

Step 3: Shake until well chilled. Strain into a coupe or martini glass.

Step 4 showing adding the edible flowers as a garnish.

Step 4: Garnish with half of a fruit and/or edible flowers.

    Substitutions and Variations

Make it fizzy: Top your martini with a splash of dry or brut Prosecco for a delightful, bubbly twist. This addition transforms the drink into a fizzy, celebratory treat. Or, for another fizzy delight, you can try my Passion Fruit Spritz.

Add more fruit flavor: Regular vodka works too, but why not experiment? Flavored vodkas from brands like Ciroc Passion bring an extra fruity punch.

Spice it up: For those who love a kick, try hot pepper-infused vodka, like Absolut Peppar. It adds an unexpected, spicy twist to your martini.

Give it a creamy twist: For a smoother, creamier texture, opt for whipped cream vodka or even coconut rum. These substitutes lend a luxurious mouthfeel and a touch of sweetness.

Make it frozen: For a frosty take, blend your martini ingredients with a handful of ice. This turns your Passion Fruit Martini into a refreshing, slushie-like treat – perfect for those warmer days of summer or when you’re just craving something extra chill!

    Expert Tips

Can’t find fresh fruit? Try These: If fresh isn’t available, use either 1 tablespoon of passion fruit puree, 1 teaspoon of concentrate for a stronger flavor, or 2 tablespoons of nectar (and reduce the syrup for sweetness). Each option keeps the tropical essence with slight variations in intensity and texture.

Seeds or no seeds: The seeds from the fruit are edible and some may slip through the cocktail strainer. If seeds aren’t your thing, just double strain by pouring your martini through a fine mesh sieve to catch them.

Prep ahead for a crowd: Want to prep ahead? Mix the insides of the fresh fruit, vodka, liqueur, juice, and syrup in a large pitcher. When you’re ready, shake it up individually with ice and your desired amount of the cocktail for a fresh, chilled martini every time. The shaking properly integrates and aerates for a more silky mouthfeel.

Chill your glasses: Pop your martini glasses in the freezer for a bit before serving. A chilled cocktail glass keeps your drink colder longer and makes it extra refreshing.

Adjust to your taste: Add more simple sugar syrup or less lime juice if you like it sweet, add more lime juice and less simple syrup if you like your drink tart. You can also use other flavored simple syrups such as my elderflower syrup.

    FAQ

Where can you buy passion fruit?

It can often be found at specialty or high-end grocery stores like Whole Foods. They might also be available at local grocery stores, especially those with a robust produce section. Keep an eye out at places like Harris Teeter, Kroger, Publix, or similar stores.

How can you tell if the fruit is ripe?

A ripe passion fruit will have a slightly wrinkled skin and feel heavy for its size. The wrinkling is key – it indicates the fruit inside is juicy and ready to eat. Don’t worry about slight blemishes on the skin; they’re normal.

What is the best liqueur for a Passion Fruit Martini?

I used Chinola for its bright and fresh flavor, but Alizé and Passoa are other alternatives. If these aren’t available, a high-quality triple sec like Cointreau can be a suitable substitute, adding a different but delightful citrus twist to your martini.
